First Hand Report on the Tsunami
Medical Relief Misson from Tulsa

Banda Aceh, Indonesia 1/20/05

This is a first hand account from Dr. Mitch Duininck who is assisting in medical relief efforts in Banda Aceh. This mission received a great deal of media exposure last week and has benefited from Rotary's Medical Supply Network, Inc.

Dr. Duininck said it is very hot and the bugs are pretty bad, there are no screens on the windows of any of the buildings so they are pretty gooped up with bug spray.  He said what is being done by the medical team being is absolutely miraculous. They are working along side of docs from Sweden Australia Germany and France -- very few other Americans there.

Dr. Duininck has been especially busy with politics and negotiations. There was a situation yesterday between two village groups, one group of people who had fled to the mountains after the wave and did not come down to help the coastal group was now needing food so Mitch was able to negotiate for some rice between the groups. He even had them come together and shake hands it said it was really cool.

He said that the hospital where they are working is almost completely staffed by volunteers now. Out of a nursing staff of over 250 before the wave, there has only been 30 that have reported back in.  He said things where worse than he really had words for. He said unlike the few stories we are getting back here every single person he meets has an incredible story of survival and loss, he said some people were literally carried for miles with the water.

Yesterday they were able to help many children in that specific area.  He also said that there was a gentleman with World Harvest that has been sitting in Jakarta since last Friday trying to get to the area where the team is. He was just able to get out yesterday on a military flight. There are NO commercial flights available and there is only about one flight a day coming in and out, therefore Duininck said it was a miracle that the team got in when they did and have the connections they have. If they had come on their own they probably would not have been able to get in.
